… A fine performance of the Respighi, sensitive to its brooding soundworld, is invaluably coupled with Pick-Mangiagalli’s more tautly argued Sonata. (BBC Music Magazine)

…Emy Bernecoli sounds as though she’s been playing these wonderful pieces all her life… (The Strad)

… impassioned, technically polished and rhythmically rock-solid interpretations… (Gramophone)

…highly natural phrasing, a clean instrumental sound and a penetrating tone… (Musica)

…limpid and captivating interpretations… (Amadeus)

Respighi’s Sonata in B minor was completed a year after The Fountains of Rome had brought him international renown. A work of considerable dimensions and scope, it combines expressive intensity with techniques grounded in early Italian music. Like Respighi, Pizzetti, Casella, Malipiero and others, Riccardo Pick-Mangiagalli belonged to the ‘generation of the 1880s’, which played such a key rôle in the resurgence of Italian instrumental music. His early Sonata, notable for its concise ideas and attractive melodies, and the three short pieces on this album, comprise the complete works for violin and piano of an undeservedly neglected composer. Volume 1 of this two-disc series can be heard on Naxos 8.573129.

My favourite strings!
A revolution in tonal sound and color for the discerning musician, Peter Infeld (PI) strings produce a rich spectrum of sound colors, the perfect blend of power and elegance, and a wide dynamic range. The strings deliver instant bow response as well as superior tuning ability. The soft left hand feeling brings out the best of you and your performance. Choose from Tin, Gold and the unique Platinum plated and thus very powerful E-strings, and the Aluminum or Silver wound D-strings to achieve a made-to-measure sound for each individual instrument and player.
