Respighi’s Sonata in B minor was completed a year after The Fountains of Rome had brought him international renown. A work of considerable dimensions and scope, it combines expressive intensity with techniques grounded in early Italian music. Like Respighi, Pizzetti, Casella, Malipiero and others, Riccardo Pick-Mangiagalli belonged to the ‘generation of the 1880s’, which played such a key rôle in the resurgence of Italian instrumental music. His early Sonata, notable for its concise ideas and attractive melodies, and the three short pieces on this album, comprise the complete works for violin and piano of an undeservedly neglected composer. Volume 1 of this two-disc series can be heard on Naxos 8.573129.

[…]A livello stilistico il Minuetto corrisponde in pieno alle altre composizioni storicizzanti di Respighi di questi anni. L’utilizzo di bassi di bordone, di sequenze di accordi in falsobordone, di basso ostinato nel trio, ma anche tutto il sistema formale, dimostrano l’abilità di Respighi di cogliere felicemente gli elementi storici e di arricchirli in maniera discreta con un’espressione propria, più moderna, ad esempio nelle seste parallele delle voci centrali, nel cromatismo occasionale della melodia e nella progressione armonica del trio.[..]

[…]Stilistisch entspricht das Minuetto ganz Respighis übrigen historisierenden Kompositionen dieser Jahre. Die Verwendung von Bordun-Bässen, Fauxbourdon-artigen Akkordfolgen, Trommelbass im Trio wie auch die ganze formale Anlage belegen Respighis Geschick, historische Elemente spielerisch aufzugreifen und sie unauffällig mit einem eigenen, moderneren Ausdruck anzureichern, zum Beispiel in den Sextparallen der Mittelstimmen, in der gelegentlichen Chromatisierung der Melodik und in der harmonischen Sequenz des Trios.[…]
